Topics and Issues

In "MIND CONTROL: The Art, Science and Ethics of Persuasion", I'll be

  1. exploring topics related to the psychology and neuroscience of persuasion and influence
  2. reviewing and commenting on different schools and traditions of "persuasion science"
  3. investigating how persuasion is practiced in specific domains (argumentation and debate; marketing and advertising; public speaking; stage magic and sleight of hand; con artists and scam operators; propaganda; etc.)
  4. examining issues related to the ETHICS of persuasion: what forms of persuasion are morally acceptable and what forms are not? What criteria are we using using to make this distinction?

This is a broad set of topics, and the content will grow organically over time as I work out my own understanding of these topics, and respond to the questions and comments that you offer on the lectures.

This is a text-based course, and lectures are updated on a weekly basis.
