The study of persuasion techniques spans millennia. The study of cognitive biases is a feature of only the last fifty years of psychology. However, modern psychology is shedding new light on the underlying cognitive mechanisms that explain how and why these techniques work.

Every critical thinker needs to be educated about the human capacity to deceive and to be deceived, whether intentionally or unconsciously.
